On Tuesday November 6 and Wednesday November 7, 2012 at 8:00 PM, the Gomhouria Theatre, in partnership with the International Relations Office of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, the Cairo Opera
and the French Institute, will host the French theatre company Le Théâtre des Amandiers who will present the play "I wish I
was Egyptian".
Adapted from the famous novel "Chicago"
written by Alaa El Aswany and staged by Jean-Louis Martinelli, the play takes
the audience to a little Egyptian community whithin the University of Chicago.
The play denounces the Police State, the
collusion between Egyptian and American secret services, as well as the use of
religion as a tool to manipulate. In pre-Revolution Egypt, some of the themes dealt
with by the author were potentially dangerous. Jean-Louis Martinelli is
offering a fluid and clever stage adaptation in a theatrical narrative
punctuated by songs. The play explores the intimate world of nine Egyptian
migrants, damaged by the psychological harm done by an emigration resulting
from the repressive policy of the Egyptian state.

A performance will also take place at the Sayed Darwish Theatre in Alexandria on Thursday November 8 at 8:00 PM.
