THE COW at the Cinema al Fourn, Darb 17 18, 8:00 PM
(1969) – Iran, Dir: Dariush Mehrjui

Influenced by Italian Neorealism, The Cow has the beauty and simplicity associated with the great films of that movement. In a small village in Iran, Hassan cherishes his cow more than anything in the world, for both emotional and economical reasons. While he is away, the cow mysteriously dies, and the villagers protectively try to convince Hassan the cow has wandered off. Grief stricken, Hassan begins to believe he is his own beloved bovine. The story is Mehrjui's treatise on emotional attachment told in his characteristic simple and touching manner. Smuggled out of Iran, where it was banned, the film has since become a landmark of Iranian cinema.

El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music receives the prestigious ROSKILDE FESTIVAL World Music Award

Just got news that Zakaria Ibrahim and his folks have been awarded the ROSKILDE Festival World Music Award. It is another well deserved recognition for the tremendous work they have done (and continue to do) to promote Egyptian Folk music through El Tanbura itself and through the other myriad of groups the organisation supports.

If you haven't done it yet, do not miss the opportunity, while in Cairo, to attend a concert at El Tanbura Hall. It is an unforgettable experience; you will not only enjoy an entertaining musical performance, but, most importantly, you will feel that you are amongst friends.

Following is an excerpt of the Press Release for the festival award:

"EGYPTIAN CENTRE FOR LOCAL MUSIC RECEIVES THE ROSKILDE FESTIVAL WORLD MUSIC AWARD  (RFWMA) 2011

The board of the RFWMA has chosen the El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music as this year's recipient of an award that will be presented at the WOMEX  world music expo on Sunday 30 October in Copenhagen, Denmark

The El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music aims to spread knowledge and to document, preserve and develop a range of traditional Egyptian music genres. The Center is awarded with the RFWMA particularly for its effort to introduce traditional Egyptian music to youth and children. The Center was founded in July 2000.

Steen Jørgensen, chairman of the Roskilde Festival Charity Society, explains why the El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music was chosen as this year's recipient: "It is important to us that we support the Egyptian and other Arabic populations in these times. Music and its surrounding culture has and will always be a strong medium and source of inspiration for people wanting a free life. We wish to help the El Mastaba Center to ensure their continuated work with preserving and developing traditional Egyptian music for all generations."

Peter Hvalkof, world music booker at Roskilde Festival, is happy that the RFWMA in 2011 is given to the El Mastaba Center: "The kind of work that the El Mastaba Center does to ensure a basis for traditional Egyptian music needs to be recognised for its inspirational value to the entire scene for world music. It makes really good sense to be able to follow-up on an outstanding concert with Rango of the El Mastaba Center at this year's Roskilde Festival in awarding the Centre the RFWMA."

Upon receiving the good news, founder and Director of the El Mastaba Center for Egyptain Folk Music, Zakaria Ibrahim, stated: "We are very honoured to receive this award and delighted to join our peers in Zanzibar and Mali whom we understand share similar motivations in developing cultural projects and preserving traditions. I am also very happy I had the opportunity to visit Roskilde Festival in the summer for a performance with our Rango musicians on the new Gloria stage."

The Award will be presented to representants from the El Mastaba Center by the director of the Oslo World Music Festival, Alexandra Archetti Stølen, during the WOMEX Award Ceremony on Sunday 30 October 12:00 - 14:00 at DR Koncerthuset/Studio 2.

My heartfelt congratulations again to all at El Mastaba. Looking forward to paying you a visit next time I come to Cairo.

AMERICAN SPLENDOR (2003) at the Darb 17 18, 8:00 PM
USA, Dir: Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini
An original mix of fiction and reality illuminates the life of comic book hero everyman Harvey Pekar.

Based on the life and work of underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar-- a prickly poet of the mundane who knows that all the strategizing in the world can't save a guy from picking the wrong supermarket checkout line, American Splendor is one of the most audaciously creative biographical movies ever made. Blending fact, fiction, and personal perspective from the comic books that inspired it, this marvelous portrait of Harvey Pekar--scowling curmudgeon, brow-beaten everyman, insightful chronicler of his own life, and frustrated file clerk at a Cleveland V.A. hospital--is an inspired amalgam of the media (comic books, TV, and film) that lifted Pekar from obscurity to the status of a pop-cultural icon.

As played by Paul Giamatti in a master-stroke of casting, we see Pekar and his understanding wife (played by Hope Davis) as underdogs in a world full of obstacles, yet also infused with subtle hope and (gasp!) heartwarming perseverance. We also see the real Pekar and this multifaceted commingling of "reel" and "real" turn American Splendor into a uniquely cinematic celebration of Pekar's life.

CULTURES OF RESISTANCE at the Darb 17 18, 8:00 PM

Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction.

After several years, traveling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story.

From Iran, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to Burma, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to Brazil, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

Featuring: Medellín poets for peace, Capoeira masters from Brazil, Niger Delta militants, Iranian graffiti artists, women's movement leaders in Rwanda, Lebanon's refugee filmmakers, U.S. political pranksters, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River, Israeli dissidents, hip-hop artists from Palestine, and many more...
