In these pages you will hopefully find interesting tips on how to take advantage of Cairo's many cultural opportunities, with particular attention to live events. Cairo Live Events Guide does not pretend to be exhaustive but will try to cover main events open to the public.

Al Masry Al Youm Weekly International Book Digest

Have spotted the Weekly International Book Digest page last week and waited a little to see if this would become a regulare feature of AMAY website. It is now only in its second issue but I hope it continues and therefore I decided to contribute to spread the word by publishing a post about it.

If you are short of ideas for further reading or simply want to keep you abreast with the latest publications about the area, and add another title to that interminable list of "must read" books, that's a page for you.

Theatre of shadows at Beit Al Suheimi

In the framework of the project "MUSIC AND THEATRE OF FIGURE: A BRIDGE ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA", a theatre of shadows work titled "The Tales of Sharazade" will be presented on Friday April 30, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the historical setting of Beit Al Suheimi.

Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival

WOW!!! This ought to be one of the main events of the year. From Wednesday May 5 toWednesday May 12, 2010 the Baad el Bahr Cultural Association in cooperation with the European Union and in partnership with a host of other institutions, will bring to Cairo many artists from the Mediterranean basin for a week of seemingly non-stop talks and performances as part of the 1st Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival.
The programme is so dense that it would be impossible to cover it on the blog but fortunately, in a welcome display of professionality, the organizers have come up with a website where you can get all information you need, including maps to reach the venues where the events take place.
The link to the Festivals webpage will remain available in the "Latest Agenda and Festival" section at the top right side of the blog until the end of the event.

See you there.

Arabic movies subtitled in English

I just read and advertisement which claims that the Reinassance cinemas (Nile City on the corniche and Bandar in Maadi) are going to screen Arabic movies with English subtitles.
Mabrouk, that's the beginning of a renaissance! It was time the producers recognized the potential of the expat community and of the wider world. Hope we'll have soon more DVDs of new productions with subtitles on the market.

So, why not having a go with the much celebrated Asafeer El Nile this weekend?

A promising additon to web-based Cairo guides

There is a new website that claims to be "The Definitive Guide to Living in the Capital". Cairo360 looks indeed promising and is a welcome addition to the list of "guides" about Cairo. The reviews seem particularly well done and cover "off the beaten track" eateries as well.
It looks as if staying at home in the evening without feeling of having missed an opportunity gets harder and harder.

Movie Night at AUC Downtown Campus

ITACA presents "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" by Giuseppe Tornatore, one of the best Italian movies of all times, on Tuesday April 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM in Room 209 of the Falaki Building in AUC Tahrir Campus.
The movie will be in Italian language with English Subtitles and will be presented by Belle Gironda. Free entry.

A famous film director, Salvatore returns to his Sicilian native town after thirty years of absence. While modernity has now changed the town he used to know, Salvatore remembers his childhood at the Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, the local movie house, and its owner Alfredo. Released in 1988, the film re-evokes Italian life during the Fascist period and ponders on Italy's dramatic social change throughout the century. Through the life of an Italian emigrant, Giuseppe Tornatore writes a cinematic poem on the dialectics between the past and present, censorship and freedom.

Italian movie night at IIC

Tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, the theatre of the Italian Cultural Institute will host the screening of the comedy "GENERAZIONE MILLE EURO" (2008), directed by Massimo Venier and starring Valentina Lodovini, Carolina Crescentini, Alessandro Tiberi, Francesca Inaudi, Paolo Villaggio.

Matteo, a 30-year-old man, is a University graduate and has a great talent for mathematics. Despite this, he can’t afford his living costs and the rent of the apartment he shares with his best friend Francesco. In a while, his life becomes a nightmare: he breaks up whit his girlfriend, is evicted and risks to be fired. The sudden arrival of Beatrice, a new flatmate who wants to become a teacher, and of Angelica who, besides being very beautiful is also the new Assistant Marketing Director in the office where Matteo works, will affect the course of events. Matteo is therefore obliged, for the first time, to think about his future and to make some choices.

2010 Indipendent Theatre Season

The 3rd annual Indipendent Theatre season will start officially on Sunday April 18, 2010 at the Rawabet Theatre in Downtown Cairo (off Champollion St., next to the Townhouse Gallery) and will run until August 2 with several productions on stage.
The season is due to start with El-Ghagar troupe's show "Sho'oub Mosta'amala" ("Used Nations") but I read conflicting reports on the media. I believe the best bet is to call El-Hanager Arts Center at (02) 27356861 for information and programme.
If any of the readers can provide me with a link for the programme of the season or of its individual productions, even if in Arabic only, I will be happy to post it.

EU Film Club 2010

Going on holiday has taken its toll on Cairowanderer and I'm still scrambling to get up to date with all the events that are taking place this week ... and they are a lot, especially on the movie side.
I am a bit late with sending out information about the EU Film Club that started two days ago, but the good thing is that it will go on for another two weeks, until Tuesday April 20, 2010 so ... plenty of time to plan and enjoy some good cinema from Europe.
The movies will be screened at different venues and the organizers have set up an excellent facebook page (click here) where you can find all information about the programme and the venues.
CLEG will keep a link throughout the duration of the event on the top right side of the main page, under the Latest Weekly Agenda.

MOROCCAN FILM WEEK

The Artistic Creativity Center in the Cairo Opera House grounds is hosting the Moroccan Film Week. The programme started on Sunday April 4 (sic!) and will run until Friday April 9, 2010.
You can find the complete programme of the week (in Arabic only) here. But not Arabic speakers need not discourage; clicking on the link under the various movie synopsis you will be redirected towards the Internet Movie Database website where you can get synopsis in English, and I have been assured that most, if not all, movies are subtitled in English as well.

6th Rencontres de l'image: the controversy goes on.

Came back from the Easter break and found a controversy raging about the forthcoming 6th edition of the annual film festival "Rencontres de l'image" organized by the French Cultural Centre in Mounira and due to start on Thursday, April 8, 2010.
All seem to revolve around the inclusion in the programme of the short movie "Presque normal" directed by the Israeli filmmaker Keren Ben Rafael. This has prompted a boycott of the festival by Egyptian members of the jury and the withdrawal of at least one Egyptian film for now.
You can read articles in English about this issue by clicking on the links below:

Egyptian Gazette

I do not know if the festival will eventually take place (follow these pages for updates) but here is the link to the programme.
