THE BLACK LIPS (USA) & LAZZY LUNG (LBN) Middle East Tour touches Cairo

The Black Lips from Atlanta (who visit Egypt for the first time), Lazzy Lung from Lebanon, Zero 50, and Faking It both from Egypt will play at the Wisdom Hall of El Sawy Culturewheel on Friday September 21, 2012 starting at 7:00 PM.

This is a real treat for music fans in the region as one of the best live acts in the world, The Black Lips out of Atlanta, USA and one of the Middle East’s best live acts Lazzy Lung from Beirut, Lebanon, join forces for a tour of the region.
The Black Lips, one of the world’s leading Indie Punk outfits, have been playing to capacity crowds at festivals all over the world, including headline slots at Primavera in Spain, Lowlands in the Netherlands, Reading and Leeds in the UK and Coachella in the US prompting Spin Magazine to declare in their latest issue: "Recommendation: If you're at a festival, and you have a choice, and Black Lips are performing, you see Black Lips. It's that simple."
Lazzy Lung has a similar reputation in the Middle East, having been named ‘Best Band in the Region’ in 2011 by Esquire Middle East. They were also named winners of last year's Battle of the Bands in Dubai sponsored by Rolling Stone ME.

We want to play everywhere on the planet, and the opportunity came up. We couldn't say no” bassist and vocalist Jared Swilley of The Black Lips explained. “Anywhere that we haven't been excites us. Not many western bands have toured the region and to be one of the first is amazing. Adventures are the best”.

The tour will take place between the months of September and October and includes gigs in Larnaca, Cairo, Alexandria, Dubai, Amman, and of course Lazzy Lung’s home town Beirut, and will be filmed by Sundance Nominated film maker Bill Cody known for his critically acclaimed documentaries namely “Athens, Georgia / Inside Out” featuring R.E.M. and the B-52’s.

Adding to the line-up will be two bands from Egypt, "Zero 50" from Mansoura who present rock music in a simple way and aim to increase the number of rock lovers in Egypt, and "Faking It", a Punk Rock Band formed in August 2006. The band is famous for using stunning sound effects, especially by guitarist Amir El Sherei, that definitely adds a special vibe and groove to their sound.

This will be the first Punk event in Egypt that will merge international and local acts in one place, bridging the gap between cultures.

BEDOUIN JERRYCAN BAND at El Dammah Theater for Free Arts

Music has always played a conversational role in peoples' interaction with each other and in creating a bridge that links different cultures. And this takes place at the global level when different bands travel from their countries to present their music to the people of other countries. El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music is committed to reaching "the other" by disseminating and promoting Egyptian music both worldwide and in Egypt, presenting performances of the bands that it has founded and mentored. These bands represent a range of different cultural areas in Egypt.
In this context, the Center strives to introduce Cairene audiences to the different folk musics of Egypt, that express the diversity of cultures which make up the shared Egyptian identity, music from the Canal Zone, the peasants of the Delta, Nubia and the music rooted in the Sudanese Zar.
(Text adapted from El Mastaba Center press release)

This Thursday September 13, 2012 the Center presents at El Dammah Theater for Free Arts (formerly El Tanbura Hall) the Bedouin band JERRYCAN, a band from Sinai, a region dear to the hearts of Egyptians, infused with the music of percussions, the desert maguna (small, double flute), nay (end-blown flute) and simsimia (lyre).
