El Tanbura band at El Dhammah Center on Thursday Aug 30

tanboura all wide

El Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music invites you to attend El Tanbura Band concert next Thursday August 30, 2012 at El Dammah Theater (formerly El Tanbura Hall) at 9:00 PM (arrive by 8:30 PM)

El Tanbura
Since quarter a century ago in the city of Port Said a group of Damma and Simismia artists undertook the responsibility to gather, keep, and revive this musical legacy which was under the threats of loss and vanishing. These artists responded to Zakaria Ibrahim's call for establishing a new band to achieve those goals. This was the beginning of El Tanbura band.

In the first five years, the band successfully managed to gather 20 hours of that precious legacy which is orally transmitted through consecutive generations and had never been documented before. The band documented it in writing, recording, video, and photography. As important are the live performances which have continued over 24 years and through which the band presents regular, weekly shows on the beach of Port Said. These shows are presented free to the people of the city whose ancestors had helped in creating this special heritage.
The band also presents two annual festivals held in the city streets: one is held in the spring and the other on Victory Day, December 23, which commemorates the peoples' victory over the tri-partitte attack of France, Britain and Israel in 1956. The resistance songs which the people created during this attack and after have become an important part of the band's repertoire. The band has continued to compose new patriotic songs for other situations and events, such as the repeated and punishing carnage of Israeli occupation of Palestine., the criminal American invasion of Iraq, the 50th anniversary of the nationalization of the Suez Canal, the war of 1956, the revolution of 25th January during which the band performed often in Tahrir square and, most recently, the first anniversary of this same revolution for which they composed the "Aadi El Dalma" song.

In 2003, under the direction and encouragement of El Mastaba, the members of El Tanbura established a school in Port Said for teaching a new generation this art of singing, percussion, instruments and dancing. Young Tanbura, as it is called, is run by Mohsen El Ashry, and this young band has developed to the point where they perform with a high level of professionalism in Port Said, Cairo, Alexandria and other places.

Sibel a 20-something female from Hamburg wishes to please her Turkish parents yet yearns for freedom. She has had her nose broken by her brother for being seen holding hands with a boy and yet she can not break her mother's heart and run away. She too attempts suicide and she first approaches Cahit there at the Hospital. Sibel asks Cahit to marry her, as she believes this to be the way out of her parent's house. Three short films produced by Fortress Europe (http://fortresseurope.blogspot.com/2006/02/immigrants-dead-at-frontiers-of-europe_16.html) and directed by the visual anthropologist Alexandra D'Onofrio. Three stories which go beyond the identification and expulsion centres, with a past and a future, an inside and an outside the cage. And with a universal feeling, be it love, paternity or solitude, with which we all can identify in order to have the certainty that in 2012 travelling is not and cannot be a crime

Deep State
45 Mins, HD, UK Premiere Nov 2012

‘Deep State’ is a film by Karen Mirza and Brad Butler that has been scripted in collaboration with author China Miéville. The film takes its title from the Turkish term ‘Derin Devlet’, meaning ‘state within the state’. Although its existence is impossible to verify, this shadowy nexus of special interests and covert relationships is the place where real power is said to reside, and where fundamental decisions are made – decisions that often run counter to the outward impression of democracy.

Amorphous and unseen, the influence of this deep state is glimpsed at regular points throughout the film – most clearly surfacing in its reflexive responses to popular protest, and in legislated acts of violence and containment, but also rumbling and reverberating, deeper down, in an eternally recurring call-and-response between rhetorical positions and counter-languages, in which a raised fist, a thrown rock, a crowd surge, an occupation provoke a corresponding reaction in the form of a police charge, a baton attack, a pepper spray, assassinations.

A powerful undertow in the ongoing tide of history, this push and pull of competing forces is deftly illuminated in a vivid montage of newly filmed and archive footage. Collided together, past, present and future trace a continuum, in which the same repetitive patterns are played out. Against a backdrop of momentous, historically resonant demonstrations, an eternal rioter, or ‘riotonaut’, is picked out, as if by a searchlight, ever-present at each and every flashpoint. On a moonscape, confronted with a picket that becomes a riot, an ur-dictator, personification of the ‘Deep State’, blurts stupefying, hot-air abstractions of neo-liberalism.
‘Deep State’ is commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella. Funded by Arts Council England and London Councils.

- On August 28-29, 2012 Mosireen presents a special screening of "Cultures of Resistance" and "The Suffering Grasses" by Korean Brazilian film producer, director and activist Iara Lee, followed by Q&A with Ms. Lee

- Tuesday August 28, 2012 at 8:00 pm

THE SUFFERING GRASSES directed by Iara Lee
52 min / Arabic with English subtitles (followed by Q&A with the director)

Over a year later, with thousands dead and counting, the ongoing conflict in Syria has become a microcosm for the complicated politics of the region, and an unsavory reflection of the world at large. Against the backdrop of the Arab Spring and the complicated politics of the region, this film seeks to explore the Syrian conflict through the humanity of the civilians who have been killed, abused, and displaced to the squalor of refugee camps. In all such conflicts, large and small, it is civilians—women and children, families and whole communities—who suffer at the leisure of those in power. When elephants go to war, it is the grass that suffers.

Cultures of Resistance (2010)
Iara Lee - 73 min
From IRAN, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to BURMA, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to BRAZIL, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in PALESTINIAN refugee camps in LEBANON, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

On Thursday August 16, 2012 at 09:00 pm.

“Sheikh Zain” Has been brought up in Minya Governorate. He was originally a Praiser (The one who sings in praise of Prophet Mohammad Peace be upon him) as was his father, as was his grandfather; He also got used to reading Qur’an. His big brother, who left school at the age of 13, was also a Praiser; and when he died, Sheikh Zain took his place. However his dream as bigger than being a Praiser, he thought of Sufi Singing (Inshad Sufi), Folklore and the Mawal Art. But being a member of the Shazleya cult in his town “Bani Mazar”, he wasn’t allowed to convert to singing, even Sufi singing (Inshad Sufi).
In 1992, a radical change has accrued to his live when one of the theatre groups used him as a religious singer (Mounshed) in the play “Taghreebat Abdel Razek” or “Abdle Razek’s expatriation” which was played in Bani Mazar.
After that, he went to Cairo, he met with “Sayed El Dawy” the most famous “Mounshed” of “Seera Helaleya”in Egypt, who taught him How to sing it. He also met with the Arghoul player “Mostafa Abdel Aziz”.
He left to France; and after his big success in the French land, it became his major starting point. From France, he travelled to most of the European countries.
His first Album was produced by the “Arab World Institute” in Paris. One of his most famous songs is “Yabky wa yadhak” or “He laughs and cries” from the movie “Bab El Shams” Directed by Yousri Nasrallah.

Family Stories, Home Movies at Cimatheque on Thursday, August 16, 2012

The Cimatheque in Downtown presents "Family Stories, Home Movies (A Selection)" on Thursday, August 16, 2012, starting 9:00 PM.

You, Waguih/ Toi, Waguih

Namir Abdel-Messieh, France, 2005, 29 min, B&W and Color, Arabic & French with English Subtitles

Reticent and introspective, the eponymous Waguih is a reformed Communist and a onetime political prisoner in the early years of the Egyptian Republic—his life unfolds in fractured conversations with his son (screenwriter Abdel-Messeeh). You, Waguih is story of diaspora: a rupture in the continuity of ancestral memory, a first-generation cultural estrangement between traditional and assimilated culture.

Balaghany Ayyoha Al Malek Al Sa’eed/ it was related to me

Mohammad Shawky Hassan, Egypt, 2011, 18 min, Color, Arabic with English Subtitles

A meditation on the complex relationship of two brothers. Images from family albums and home videos are juxtaposed with sounds extracted from popular radio and television programs in the 1990’s, unfolding this relationship and the interplay of notions of brotherhood, patronage, masculinity, and sexuality.

Tabaq El Sardin/ A Plate of Sardines–or The First Time I Heard of Israel

Omar Amiralay, Syria/France, 1997, 17 min, Color, Arabic with English Subtitles

“The first time I heard of Israel, I was in Beirut, and the conversation was about a plate of sardines. I was six years old, Israel was two.” In this film, Amiralay visits the village of Quneytra (which was destroyed by Israel in the 1967 war and then taken back by Syria in 1973, but deliberately left as a ruin). Accompanying him is fellow Syrian filmmaker Mohammad Malas, who was born in Quneytra and whose film The Night evokes his parents’ memories of the then bustling, now lifeless village.

Ebtasem! Anta fi Janoub Loubnan/ Smile! You are in South Lebanon

Dalia Al-Kury, Jordan, 2008, 53 min, Color, Arabic with English Subtitles

While the politicians of the world are focused on saving Lebanon from a potential civil war and a reoccurring failed elections, the filmmaker goes on a family visit to south Lebanon and focuses the lens on her animated uncle Rami, who would much rather swim, little Mariam who is learning how to walk and Ali, the courageous farmer, who is giving his banana tree a Cesarean Section. The result is an intimate and vibrant family portrait, which represents the potency of the Lebanese dark humor—a talent that has helped them cope with wars still fresh in memory.

This program is presented by Mohammad Shawky Hassan, filmmaker and Director of Film Programs at ArteEast.
