Samaa International Festival for Sufi Music and Chanting
Yesterday evening I attended a wonderful festival concert at the Ghouri Palace and I was planning to write about it to encourage as many of you as possible to attend one of the following evenings, but then I stumbled into this article on today's El Masry El Youm about the same subject, and I thought ... leave it to the experts.
Do have a look at it and spare an evening for the festival (running until September 4); you will not regret it.

Eftekasat, The Percussion Show and Massar Egbari to play at Cairo360 fundraising event for "Operation Smile" Children Charity
Cairo 360, the multi-award winning online magazine from Media Republic which serves as the definitive guide to living in Cairo, announced plans to host a charity fundraiser at the Fairmont Nile City on Wednesday 1st September 2010. The event, held at the exclusive Bab El Nil Ramadan terrace is one of three events held during the holy month in support of Operation Smile, the worldwide organization which provides safe, free, and efficient cleft palate surgery for children across the globe.
Bab El Nil is a venue specifically set up by the Fairmont Nile City during Ramadan, for a month long celebration of Egyptian culture through art, fashion and music. Cairo 360 will be hosting the third and final event centred around live performances from several bands including Eftekasat, The Percussion Show, and Masar Egbari; three leading Egyptian bands at the forefront of modern Arabic music.
“We’re delighted to have been given the opportunity by the Fairmont Nile City, and Operation Smile to help organize one of their fundraisers during the holy month. It is been a very exciting project for us, and we are pleased to have big local artists such as Eftekasat, The Percussion Show, and Massar Egbari on board, all of whom are showing their support by performing pro bono” said Waseem El Tanahi, Publisher of Cairo 360. “The highly anticipated evening of celebrations is bound to be a calendar event for Cairenes looking for entertainment during Ramadan which remains true to the spirit of the holy month by giving something back to those that are less fortunate” he added.
The fundraising events will be previewed regularly throughout Ramadan on www.Cairo360.com which also provides a comprehensive list of Ramadan events in Egypt, and more information on how to make a donation before the 1st September 2010. Zikr and Sufi Songs at the MakAn
During the month of Ramadan the MakAn presents every wednesday at 9:00 PM a performance with Zikr and Sufi Songs.
The inshad is a melodic vocal performance set in religious contexts, most notably in the context of the hadra of Sufi brotherhoods. Dhikr or "remembrance" (of Allah) refers to rhythmic chanting of the names of Allah.
Zikr and Inshad can be found in the context of public celebrations, such as saints' festivals (the mulid), the Prophet's birthday and celebrations of rites of passage, such as memorials, circumcisions and, in Upper Egypt, weddings. These draw a wide range of participants, both men and women, and comprise a mix of adherents to particular Sufi brotherhoods, as well as general public coming for the ecstatic emotional and spiritual experience.
Doors open at 8:30pm.
Tickets: 20 LE with reservation, 30 LE at the door
Ps: Reservations cancelled after 9:00pm
Tea and Karkade are served

DARB 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center
In a very short time DARB 1718 has established itself as one of the main cultural venues of Cairo, and this despite its not exactly central location. With the hosting of the Artbeat Festival shortly before the Summer break and of the Mawaweel Festival now during the Ramadan month, DARB has become a "must know" location for anybody interested in Cairo's cultural life.
The area occupied by the Center is quite extensive and looks pretty much like a small "village" or rather a medieval court. It is shaped like a horseshoe with low buildings hosting crafts ateliers and laboratories on the sides. Whichever end you come in, when you reach the end of the alley you find a square (where a stage is set up for concerts and theatre performances), and a garden, where movies are screened when advertised. The building in front of you host the Art Gallery proper. It is a lovely complex and well worth the trip.
How to get there by car? Well, some adventurous people with better knowledge of Cairo's streets than I might find it more convenient to get there from the Salah Salem Road, but I prefer to stick to the well known Corniche al-Nil (Cairo side). From the Corniche you have to go up the 10th of Ramadan Bridge (I would probably call it flyover). If you have no clue which one it is, no worries, I did not as well ... but I found out.
If you are coming from Downtown, it is the bridge you find on your left when making a U-turn at the first big square after you've waved goodbye to the southern tip of the island of Manial. If this does not help, it might help to know that it is also the location of a seemingly permanent bottleneck traffic jam, and of a Co-op Petrol Station.
If you are coming from Maadi, it is much easier, as it is the first square when you get down from the Asaar Al-Naby Bridge (that is the second bridge you go over coming from Maadi). In the square you'll take the flyover on your left.
If you got here, you've done most of the job. The flyover is just about a km long (you see the outer wall of DARB 1718 on your left just at the end of it). Make a u-turn at the first chance and, when the road forks keep right (unless you do not want to get over the flyover again and repeat the exercise ... just to make sure you won't miss it next time). At the next (almost immediate) fork, continue straight (main road - and most other cars - will turn right). You will find yourself in a rather large side road with several mechanic workshops. After about 500 mt. you'll find DARB entrance on your left.
Parking is available on the street.
If you were daunted by the directions (you should't, it's not as difficult as it seems), do not have a car, or simply are a clever and conscious person, take the Metro, get down at Mar Girgis station, turn right once out of the Coptic Museum's side exit, and then left at the first opportunity, just after the police checkpoint. You will walk through a small, very characteristic residential area with cafes full of people watching TV, playing, or smoking sisha. Continue straight for few hundred meters on the main road and just when it bisects, you'll find on your rights the "gates" of the courtyard of Darb 1718.

On Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 9:00 PM, the Italian Cultural Centre in Cairo will host the screening of the movie "The Thin Match Man" (Italy 2009) directed by Marco Chiarini and starring Francesco Pannofino, Marco Leonzi, and Greta Castagna. The movie has won several awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Cairo International Film Festival for Chidren 2010.
Italian with English subtitles.
Simone, an eleven year-old boy, has to spend all the summer at home under the ferocious gaze of his father. Outside: the sweet wind of adventure. Inside: the blackest boredom. Then from the city, Lorenza, a thirteen year-old girl with green eyes arrives in Simone’s village. Now is a question of life and death: Simone has to escape his home and run away with Lorenza in his fantastic reign. There, among imaginary friends who talk contrarily, or live in the dark under his bed, or are giant dwarfs, the two teenagers will search for the Match Man, the king of that enchanted bunch.
