Italian Movie series at AUC

ITACA presents the movie LAMERICA (1994) by Gianni Amelio, tomorrow Tuesday March 23, 2010 in Room 209, Falaki Building, AUC Tahrir Campus, 7 PM.
The movie will be presented in Italian with English Subtitles and will be introduced by Vincenzo Mattei.

Lamerica is a crude film on migration that questions, through the "return home" of a young and an old Italian, the very notion of national identity. Shot in Albania after the collapse of the communist regime, the movie describes the two main characters' generational differences.
Their long journey home, and particularly the elder's delusion in expecting to find in the nineties the Italy of his youth, enacts a superb drama, and parody, of two Italian emigrants returning as foreigners to their own country.

Free entry but bring an ID card for the gate.

"GIRLS ROCK" - Workshop and Concert for Female Bands

The Goethe Institute in Egypt, the Swedish Institute Alexandria and the Arts Center of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organize what, to my knowledge, is the first exerience of this kind in Egypt. German and Swedish female musicians will come to Alexandria and share ideas, exchange experiences, and jam with their Egyptian colleagues. The workshop will culminate in a concert at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The event will take place on May 13-15 but the deadline for the submission of applications is March 31. Music style is not important, sharing culture and dialogue is. I think this is a truly great idea and I wish it will be a success; spread the word.

You can dowload the application form in English and Arabic and get contact information from the webpage of the Goethe Institute dedicated to the event.

Music and theatre: A Bridge across the Mediterranean Sea

What follows is the press release (courtesy of the Italian Cultural Institute) of a very interesting project that see the involvment of young Egyptian and Italian musicians. The project culminates in a series of concerts in various locations across the city. To know more about the project and the program of the musical performances, click here.

****
The Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo presents a music and theatre project: "Music and Theatre of figure: a bridge across the Mediterranean Sea" (call for proposals for cultural activities 2009, EU Delegation, Cairo). The project aims to promote the dialogue and the exchange among peoples and cultures, in order to improve reciprocal knowledge and give visibility to the Euro-Mediterranean Partenariat.
The initiative, funded by the European Union and the Italian Cultural Institute, involves Helwan University - Faculty of Music. The targeted audience are young students of music, and musicians as well as actors and students of drama schools. The project has the purpose to prove that a dialogue between different cultures is possible, against the common view of “culture clash” and incompatibility between East and West.
Through the organization of workshops different music and theatre experiences, from Europe and Egypt, come together and are compared.
Musicians from both countries will work together in seminars and workshops and play live performances using music and theatre language as medium for further cultural achievements.

The music program presents pieces of the XVIII, XIX and XX century from European and Egyptian repertory, scheduled as follows:

- Thursday March the 11th at 7.00 pm: pieces of the XIX century, IIC Theatre;
- Sunday March the 14th at 8.00 pm: mid-project at Gomhoreya Theatre;
- Thursday March the 18th at 7.00 pm: pieces of the XX century, IIC Theatre;
- Wednesday March the 24th at 7.00 pm: music and cinema, Helwan University – Faculty of Engineering;
- Thursday March the 25th at 7.00 pm: music and cinema, IIC Theatre.

20th Cairo International Film Festival for Children

If you visit the Cairo Opera in the coming days you will find its audience quite different (I was about to add, and quite noisier, ... but recalling some concerts I attended I am not quite sure :-)) from the usual one.

In a commendable initiative, the Ministry of Culture opens the doors of its theatres to the children for the 20th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival for Children starting tomorrow Thursday, March 4 2010 at 8:00 PM in the Main Hall of the Cairo Opera House and running until Thursday, March 11.
The Festival, featuring movies from all over the world, is the one and only of its kind in the Middle East and is establishing for itself a worldwide reputation.

For program information and movie synopsis, click here to visit the Festival website.

Cairo 2nd International Jazz Festival

The Cairo 2nd International Jazz Festival brings to Cairo several interesting bands from Egypt, Europe, Japan and the USA and will take place from Thursday, March 11 to Monday, March 15, 2010 at El Sawi Cultural Centre in Zamalek with "beyond stage" performances at the Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel, the BOSS Cafe and the Cairo Jazz Club.
The organizers have even set up a wonderful website where you can get not only the program of the festival  but also information about performers and where to get tickets.
Mabrouk, very good job indeed!
