In these pages you will hopefully find interesting tips on how to take advantage of Cairo's many cultural opportunities, with particular attention to live events. Cairo Live Events Guide does not pretend to be exhaustive but will try to cover main events open to the public.

DALIA FAROUK

I attended the Cairo Choral Society performance of Händel’s Messiah at the Ewart Memorial Hall and was confronted for the first time with the wonderful voice of Dalia Farouk. Though not an Opera buff, I was really impressed by the beauty of her voice, so I saw it fit to add hers to CLEG Bios, hoping that there will be soon many other opportunities to see her live; I might even be enticed to go more often to see Opera performances...

"Dalia Farouk was 14 when she began her singing studies at the Cairo Conservatory, graduating with honors in 1997. Since then she has studied at UCLA and Julliard, and at Indiana University as a Fulbright scholar. She took a doctorate in singing from l’École Normale de Musique de Paris, also with a scholarship.
Dalia has been a member of the Cairo Opera Company since 1997. Her repertoire include the principal soprano roles in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, L’Elisir d’Amore, La Bohème, Un Ballo in Maschera, The Magic Flute, The Telephone, Don Pasquale, Romeo and Juliet, Suor Angelica, Dido and Aeneas.
She has also performed in The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, West Side Story and Sound of Music. In 2008 she was invited to perform as soloist in the occasion of the International Celebration of France’s Presidency of the European Union, and of the Anniversary of the Cairo Opera House. She is also a recitalist, having performed in Egypt, France, Germany, United States and Morocco."

Biography by Anne Marie Shalaby, taken from the Program of Händel’s Messiah performance of the Cairo Choral Society (Dec. 2010)

The Invention - A Children's Play

The Invention, a children's play by Brad Gromelski, directed by Amina Khalil and Leila Saad will be performed on Friday December 17, 2010 at En Vogue in Heliopolis at 2:00 PM and in the Oriental Hall of AUC Tahrir Campus at 7:00 PM, on Saturday, December 18 in the Alumni Lounge of AUC New Cairo Campus at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 21 at Diwan Bookstor in Heliopolis at 7:00 PM, and on Saturday January 8, 2011 at the Fun Yard on Cairo-Alex Road (km. 18) at 11:00 AM and at Darb 1718 at 3:00 PM.

Brad Gromelski's "The Invention" is a play that involves the efforts of the Narrator and three Fun Merchants to assemble a toy machine they have invented. Conflict arises when Kalibad, a toy spy, arrives and attempts to sabotage the invention. The main character in the show is The Audience, whose vocal and physical participation is necessary for the play to exist. The children of the audience shout warnings of Kalibad's arrival, carry and actually assemble the invention on stage, put together a cage and trap Kalibad inside of it, and co operate in other tasks. If the children are successful in their efforts, they receive a surprise souvenir of their adventure. (by Samuel French Inc.)

After Eight Night Pub and Restaurant

Feeling that Cairo lacks a bit of that “underground” flair? Looking for something more “alternative” than the Buddha Bar? Want to have plenty of fun with live music from some of the most entertaining bands in town? Well, the After Eight might well be what you are looking for.

To be clear from the outset, I have to say that this is not a place that will please everyone. Strictly speaking, the place resembles more a cellar than a club. Its entrance is in a shabby alley off Kasr El Nil Street, a place you would not even notice if it was not for the big After Eight sign above it. The venue is small, with windows permanently shut (I suspect they are only a decorative item). The light is so dim that you’ll have problem recognizing your partner, and the air is clouded by an ever increasing layer of fog created by the smoke of hundreds of cigarettes. The place is usually as packed as a Talaat Harb pavement at weekends, and when the music starts, it is time to practice your hand (and body) language as any form of verbal communication is virtually impossible.
Sounds like hell? Well, provided you are the right person for the place, it isn’t! The décor is basic but functional. The dim lights give a cosy feeling to the place (was about to say intimate, but it does not really apply here, unless you arrive at 9:00 PM when the place is virtually empty), the service is efficient and very friendly without being affected, the amplification system is of good quality, the crowd (overwhelmingly local) is young, energetic and very civilized (thanks probably to the “couples only” door policy). On the top of it the food and beverage menu will not blow a hole in your wallet (prices available on the website). The live bands performing at After Eight are of the highest quality (Salalem, Wust El Balad, Sahra and Bashir are regulars). Live concerts start around 11:30 PM and go usually on until 1:30 AM (with a break). Before, after, and in between, it is the DJ that keeps the ambiance warm. Closing time is 3:00 AM. There is a minimum charge of 100 LE at weekends and on Monday, and 60 LE the other days. You shall be 25 years of age to get access to the place (bring ID).

You will smell like a smoked herring, your ears will whistle, you'll lose your voice, and you’ll probably be dead tired the “morning after”, but you’ll have had a hell of an evening, guaranteed!

After Eight Night Pub and Restaurant - 6, Kasr El Nil St. (just a block before the “Arabesque” restaurant), Downtown Cairo. Tel: 010 3398000. Website: http://www.after8cairo.com

Ahram Online Website

The brand new English website of Ahram online has been online (sorry for the repetition) for a week or so. I think it is well done and, though still in his beta version, promises to become a welcome addition to Egypt's English language daily newsites. And how could it be otherwise, given that it is run by Egypt's largest news organization and publisher of Midlle East oldest newspaper, the daily Al Ahram, in publication since 1864!

Italian Movie Night & Tribute to Mario Monicelli

On Sunday December 5, 2010 at 6.00 pm (rerun at 8.00 pm) the theatre of the Italian Cultural Institute will host the screening of the movie "THE HERETIC", directed by Pietro Maria Benfatti. Starring: Tobias Moretti, Remo Girone, Robert Stadlober, Lino Capolicchio, Melanie Berton, Gianni Musy, Luigi Maria Burruano. Drama, running time 105 min. – Italy 2005.
The story is concerned with the life of Cecco d'Ascoli, who lived between the end of the ‘200s and the beginning of the following century. A man of science, professor of Medicine at the University of Bologna, he was forced to stop teaching in 1325 after holding a lecture on the “Commento alla Sfera del Sacrobosco”. Accused of heresy by the Inquisition, he was condemned to death in 1327.
Italian with English subtitles.

And on Monday December 6, in the same venue at 7:00 PM, the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo is organizing a special evening to commemorate the well known Italian director Mario Monicelli with the screening of the movie "DESERT ROSES”, directed by Mario Monicelli. Starring Michele Placido, Alessandro Haber, Giorgio Pasotti, Fulvio Falzarano, Moran Atias, Tatti Sanguineti. Drama, running time 102 min. – Italy 2006
Like a mere pinpoint in the infinite Libyan desert, a handful of young Italians set up a camp in a remote outpost where they have been stationed. The waving palms and undulating dunes set such a cheery lazy holiday mood, that only the occasional crackling news bulletins to rouse the troops remind them that they are in late summer 1941. The moonstruck Major spends his days and nights composing love letters to his young bride. Since they are a medical unit on the African front, the Franciscan friar who is devoted to caring for the villagers nearby forces them to help as well so the military occupation seems to turn into a humanitarian mission.
Yet, it is the intimate unsuspected betrayal of the Major’s young wife that contains all the pain and horror of their own tremendous betrayal. That is, as victims of a fate to which the young men had all so innocently and lightheartedly turned.

Italian with Italian subtitles.
