In these pages you will hopefully find interesting tips on how to take advantage of Cairo's many cultural opportunities, with particular attention to live events. Cairo Live Events Guide does not pretend to be exhaustive but will try to cover main events open to the public.

This is a private, independent, nonprofit endeavour. This blog was started in August 2008 by Cairowanderer who has been running it solo up to May 2011. "Garbage Dreams" at Darb 1718

Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center will host the screening of the film “Garbage Dreams", which is supported through CIM (Center for International Migration) on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 8:30 PM.
 “Garbage Dreams” is a film by Mai Iskander (Producer, Director and Cinematographer) and a proud winner of 22 awards.  It recounts the lives of three youth growing up in the world’s largest garbage village, Manshiet Nasser, with the Zabaleen (Arabic for “Garbage People”), and shows a community making a living of collecting and re-cycling Cairo’s garbage.

After the film screening  viewers will have the chance to meet two of the characters playing in the film, who are from Manshiet Nasser, and to listen to a short presentation on garbage segregation.

Pokemon Crew in Cairo

The internationally renowned French group of Hip Hop and Breakdance Pokemon Crew will be performing in Cairo at the Gomhouria Theatre on Saturday June 19, 2010 at 9:00 PM in the framework of the International Modern Dance Festival.

HIP HOP CONNECTION in Cairo ... and Alexandria

Hip Hop Connection is a spicy musical experiment that counts on the intercultural bonds created by common forms of artistic expression. Five Hip Hop groups from four countries across the Euro-Mediterranean exchange their styles and ideas about Hip Hop in search of common grounds. Hip Hop Connection presents the outcome of this experiment in a joined performance. Featuring: Y-Crew (Egypt), Les Gourmets (France), the Berlin Allstars (Germany) and Ayben (Turkey).

The project is presented by the Goethe Institute Egypt, the French Cultural & Cooperation Centre, Turkish Consulate and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

11th Egyptian International Modern Dance Festival

The 11th edition of the Egyptian International Modern Dance Festival will take place from Wednesday June 16 to Monday July 5, 2010.
Venues of this much awaited event will be the Cairo Opera House (Main, Small and Open Air theatres) and the Gomhouria Theatre. Those living in Alexandria can catch some of the shows at the Sayed Darwish Theatre.
This edition will feature companies from France, Tunisia, Sudan, USA, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey, in addition to several companies from Egypt.

2nd Cairo Refugee Film Festival

The 2nd Cairo Refugee Film Festival will take place from Thursday June 17 to Sunday June 20, 2010 in the open air cinema (Cinema Al-Fourn) of the Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center.
Also this year the organizers have set up a very interesting programme and, as a plus, will accomodate you on cosy bean bags under the stars.
Oh, and on the closing evening there will be even a concert!

ARTBEAT Festival

The ARTBEAT Festival will take place from Thursday June 10 to Sunday June 13, 2010 in Cairo and El Minia. Venues in Cairo will be the Cairo Jazz Club, the Darb 1718 Art and Culture Center, and the Geneina Theatre in Al Azhar Park.
As far as live music is concerned, the organizers will bring to Cairo the following bands: Al Nile Band, El Dor El Awal and Massar Egbari (Egypt), Robert Fischer and Zaebo (Germany), A Fula's Call (Holland), i-Trio (Switzerland) and La Banda del Pepo (Spain).

YASSER EL SERAFI

First Concert Master of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Yasser El Serafi was born in Alexandria in 1969. At the age of six he started to play the violin at the Alexandria Conservatoire with Renato Borghese and Lisette Meguerditchian and won the first prize in the national Strings Competition in 1986.

In 1988,he received a scholarship from the French government to continue his musical studies in Paris. He was awarded four gold medals in violin, chamber music, conducting,  and theory of music, as well as the excellence degree in violin and chamber music from the Conservatoire National de Rueil-Malmaison and the Conservatoire National de Paris.


He performed as a soloist with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in 1991 and 1993 at the anniversary of the Cairo Opera House. He gave recitals in Paris, Rome, Geneva and in Japan at Suntory Hall, Aoyama University in Tokyo, Nagoya Opera House and Kyoto Concert Hall.


Yasser El Serafi conducted the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, the Alexandria Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Rueil-Malmaison, the Orchestre de l'Ecume and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in 2005 where he performed the New World Symphony by Antonin Dvorak.


Yasser El Serafi will play in the Main Hall of Cairo Opera House as violin soloist the concert on D Major, op. 61 by Ludwig Van Beethoven, on Sunday June 5, 2010 at 9:00 PM with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Andreas Spörri.
