"Wasteland" screened at Townhouse Library on Wednesday 27 July, 2012

"Waste land" screened at Townhouse Library in Downtown on Wednesday 27 July, 2012 at 7:00 PM.
Directed by Lucy Walker

Filmed over nearly three years, “Waste Land” follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

UEFA EURO 2012 Screenings at the Cairo Jazz Club

Anyone who is remotely into football, or simply into having a good time, will enjoy UEFA screening nights at the Cairo Jazz Club. For the occasion they have organized a special menu equipped with tantalizing football snacks (their words!) that you can munch on while watching the game.
Music live performances will take place as scheduled at the end of the matches, to provide guests a good balance of sports and live entertainment. Seems a good offer to me!

For reservations please contact 010 6880 4767.
Reservation lines open daily from 5pm

Movie Screening: Hawi (The Juggler) by Ibrahim el-Batout at the NVIC on Sunday June 3, 2012

Don't miss the chance to attend the critically acclaimed film (and director of) "Hawi" (The Juggler) on Sunday June 3, 2012 playing at the NVIC in Zamalek, at 7:00 PM. Make sure to be ahead of time to avail seats. Also the director Ibrahim El-Batout will be present at the screening for a QnA session!

 HAWI (The Juggler)
Directed by Ibrahim El-Batout (Egypt – 2010)
Language: Arabic (English subtitles)
Duration: 112 minutes

Hawi is El-Batout’s third feature film. The story takes places in Alexandria, the city where Egyptian cinema was born more than 100 years ago. Like in ‘Ein Shams’, El-Batout made the film without big budget or script and with non-professional actors. He only put two conditions namely that the cast and crew should be all people from the Mediterranean city and that they would shoot in locations for free. Inspired by Alexandria and the actors the director met in the street, ‘Hawi’ became a touching sketch of the social reality of Egypt and the daily life in Alexandria with its hope and disillusion.

Ibrahim El-Batout (born 1963) graduated in Physics at the American University in Cairo, but enrolled in cinema when he started to work for a production company. He has worked as a director, producer and cameraman, capturing stories mainly about human loss, suffering, and displacement. With ‘Hawi’ he won the Best Film and Best Scenario Awards in Beirut International Film Festival 2011 and the price for Best Arab film at Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2010.
