In these pages you will hopefully find interesting tips on how to take advantage of Cairo's many cultural opportunities, with particular attention to live events. Cairo Live Events Guide does not pretend to be exhaustive but will try to cover main events open to the public.

2011 Caravan Festival of the Arts, in Maadi

You might remember that, due to the Egyptian uprising, the interfaith 2011 Caravan Festival of the Arts, scheduled for the first week of February (the UN's World Interfaith Harmony Week), had to be postponed. I am very pleased to announce that the organizers have managed to reschedule this much-awaited event that will now take place from Thursday May 12 to Wednesday 18, 2011.
As a result of the "25 January Revolution", the organizers have added a new component to this year’s Caravan Festival. There will be a parallel visual art exhibition, (next to the primary one with the theme "My Neighbor"), titled "The Peoples' Egypt since 25 January". Many of the participating artists in the Caravan Festival (such as Mohamed Abla, Reda Abdel Rahman, Khalid Abdalla, etc) were in Tahrir for most, some for all, of the time.
In addition to the visual art exhibition, the festival will host artists in the film, literature and music fields, including Khaled Al Khamissi (best-selling novelist/writer) and Mohamed Antar (ney player musician).
The new schedule for the festival is:

*Opening Night of Caravan Festival of the Arts exhibition, Thursday May 12 at 7:00 PM: Presentation by James Rawley (United Nations Resident Coordinator to Egypt), and various Christian and Muslim religious dignitaries, with all 45 Arab and Western participating artists present, including Mohamed Abla, Reda Abdel Rahman, Britt Boutros Ghali, Roland Prime (the exhibition will then be open daily through 18 May).

*Literature Night, Saturday May 14 at 7:00 PM: Talk and book-signing by Khaled El Khamissi, best-selling Egyptian author of the internationally acclaimed novel "Taxi".

*Closing Musical Concert: Wednesday May 18 at 7:00 PM: Concert by Mohammed Antar, world renowned Ney (Middle Eastern Flute) player.

All events will take place at St. John’s Church in Maadi (corner of Port Said Rd & Rd 17). Telephone 2358-3085.
