The Sächsiche Staatskapelle Dresden's Egypt concerts saga
It is now official: the two concerts scheduled in Alexandria and Cairo of the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden, one of the oldest in the world and for the first time on tour in Egypt, are "deferred" and will not take place on October 31 and November 2.
The first public announcement of the cancellation came out on the press last Sunday, but the ticket office of the Opera House would refuse to reimburse tickets because "it was not official yet", and in fact, until yesterday, ads of the events were running in local English newspapers.
Yesterday though, according to a front page article of today's Egyptian Gazette (not yet online at time of posting), the press conference due to announce the details of the visit was canceled two hours before it was due to begin. A press release confirmed that the performances were postponed over security fears related to the trial over the murder of Egyptian Marwa el-Sherbini (the murder happened, and the trial take place, in the same city from where the orchestra is coming).
Opera House officials are negotiating with the Orchestra's officials trying to find new dates for the visit.
You'll find the complete article on the front page of today's Egyptian Gazette.
