In these pages you will hopefully find interesting tips on how to take advantage of Cairo's many cultural opportunities, with particular attention to live events. Cairo Live Events Guide does not pretend to be exhaustive but will try to cover main events open to the public.

Note from a life of music - Selim Sednaoui on Edward Said

If you happen to live in Cairo, like music and admire the late Edward Said, you will love this excellent article from an Al-Ahram Weekly of 2005, featuring an interview with Selim Sednaoui who remembers his friend.
I stumbled on it by accident and could not take my eyes off the screen till I reached the end (and it is long!).
Excellent stuff and a perfect reading to remember this great man of culture on the very day of what would have been his 74th birthday.

  1. Fascinating article. Interesting footnote: Edward Said's piano teacher while he was in Cairo, Ignace Tiegerman, was considered the equal of Horowitz. Indeed, it is said that Horowitz was glad that Tiegerman was in self-imposed exile in Cairo, so as not to pose a threat to him! Tiegerman, originally from Poland, lived in Helwan, but also Maadi briefly. www.arkivmusic.com has a recording of Tiegerman performing Brahms, Chopin, Saint-Saens and others, with the Cairo Symphony.

  2. We will publish Tiegerman's complete recordings in March 2010, including the Saint-Saens Egyptian concerto, composed while the Frenchman was on Roda Island. see www.arbiterrecords.com for updates.
