Note from a life of music - Selim Sednaoui on Edward Said
If you happen to live in Cairo, like music and admire the late Edward Said, you will love this excellent article from an Al-Ahram Weekly of 2005, featuring an interview with Selim Sednaoui who remembers his friend.
I stumbled on it by accident and could not take my eyes off the screen till I reached the end (and it is long!).
Excellent stuff and a perfect reading to remember this great man of culture on the very day of what would have been his 74th birthday.

Fascinating article. Interesting footnote: Edward Said's piano teacher while he was in Cairo, Ignace Tiegerman, was considered the equal of Horowitz. Indeed, it is said that Horowitz was glad that Tiegerman was in self-imposed exile in Cairo, so as not to pose a threat to him! Tiegerman, originally from Poland, lived in Helwan, but also Maadi briefly. www.arkivmusic.com has a recording of Tiegerman performing Brahms, Chopin, Saint-Saens and others, with the Cairo Symphony.
ReplyDeleteWe will publish Tiegerman's complete recordings in March 2010, including the Saint-Saens Egyptian concerto, composed while the Frenchman was on Roda Island. see www.arbiterrecords.com for updates.
